Have you ever thought you had a good plan and then catastrophe happens when you try to put your plan into action? That happens almost every Sunday for me, while I’m teaching my Sunday School Class at church. You see I teach 3-6-year-olds, and some days it’s like herding cats in there. I don’t care how hard I work at a lesson, some days I just can’t get them to be still enough to listen to it! Do you ever think that is maybe a little bit of how God feels about us? God has this beautiful plan for us, but we won’t be still enough to listen. Sometimes, all we have to do is be still and KNOW that HE is God, but we run around in a panic trying to find the solution to the problem ourselves. SMH! (Shaking My Head, just in case I have some readers who don’t know what SMH stands for).
I did teach a Sunday School Lesson a few weeks ago, on how Jesus calmed the storm. Matthew 8: 23-27
“23 Then he got into the boat, and his disciples followed him.24 Suddenly a furious storm came up on the lake so that the waves swept over the boat. But Jesus was sleeping.25 The disciples went and woke him, saying, “Lord, save us! We’re going to drown!”
26 He replied, “You of little faith, why are you so afraid?” Then he got up and rebuked the winds and the waves, and it was completely calm.
27 The men were amazed and asked, “What kind of man is this? Even the winds and the waves obey him!”
I’m sure the disciples thought that they were going to get on a boat for a while and rest, but that storm got ugly. They forgot who was with them, JESUS. He apparently wasn’t worried, He was sleeping. This is such an example of how we should face the storms in our life or the catastrophes that come our way. This also brings to my mind of how I tried to teach my girls when they were younger, to not panic when they go hurt, or if something upset them, I taught them to practice the “3 C’s” Stay Calm, Cool, and Collected. It took with Dani, but not with Jana, but that’s a whole other story.
Let’s break that down further. Stay calm. I want to think of this as an action word. Calm, make tranquil and quiet; soothe. RELAX!! Life is going to throw catastrophes at you, don’t panic in these moments. That’s what the devil would like you to do. He wants you to forget you have the Almighty One on your side. When we have a calm mind, we can think clearly and process the situation. Don’t panic like a herd of cats!
Stay Cool. Stay composed. Keep it together! If we lose our ability to process the situation, we lose focus on the outcome. Proverbs 29: 18 reads, “Where there is no vision, the people perish; but happy is he who keeps to the teaching.” In every situation, great or small, remember to stay focused on “in the end, this will work out for good”. Someone else is always watching you as well, in this moment of “Coolness” we are setting an example to others on how to walk with Christ even in our catastrophic moments.
Stay Collected. Don’t be distracted. In this catastrophic moment, we can become distracted by what is going on around us, and forget that we are children of the King! We also forget our mission, you remember to draw others to Christ. How can we attract others to Christ, if we are not showing the world that we have something different? After all, we win in the end. All things, bad or good, work together for good to them that love the Lord. Praise God even in your darkest moments; it’s in those moments that we show others that we have something different.
I hope that I’ve said something this morning that will be a blessing to you. My mind seems to ramble these days. Squirrel… LOL!
Have a Blessed Day!
